Distracted driving is a part of everyday driving; no matter who you are, we’ve all done it. Whether it be driving over the speed limit or a lane change without a signal, driving mishaps are going to happen, and they typically result from inattentive behavior. Daydreaming, distractions from phones and passengers, and other outside stimuli can be detrimental to someone’s ability to drive. However, with these tips, you will be able to keep distractions at a minimum while maximizing your safety!
Don’t Direct & Drive
Thanks to our smartphones, getting directions to our destination is simple enough. However, when people input their directions while behind the wheel, they undoubtedly become a distracted driver. Instead of looking up directions while on the go, put your destination into your phone before you start your car. That way, you know exactly where you need to go before you pull out of your driveway.
Don’t DJ & Drive
Similar to the last tip, trying to find the perfect driving song on Spotify can lead to inattentive drivers who are a danger to themselves and others. Before starting your car, find the music you want to listen to for the duration of your trip. If you are going on a road trip, ask one of your friends to be the “designated DJ” so you can pay attention to the road. If you are going on a long trip by yourself, create a playlist of music beforehand so you don’t have to mess with your music while you’re on the go!
Don’t Dine & Drive
Although eating in the car can save time, it can also put your life at risk. Burgers, fries, and practically every food you can think of will distract you from the road in some way. If you have the time, dine-in rather than taking your food to go; sometimes it’s beneficial to take a break from driving when you have been on the road for a while. If you don’t have the time to spare for a dine-in meal, order food that is easy to eat and doesn’t require a lot of your focus. Items that are small and neat are better options for attentive driving than dishes that are messy and large. Therefore, stick with finger foods and non-utensil food items.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself from being distracted while on the road. No matter where you’re headed, stay safe and stay and attentive!
