Vaginal Mesh

Vaginal mesh is a device that is used to repair weak or damaged tissue in the lower pelvis area. It is usually made from a synthetic material that is not absorbable, but is porous. This device is most commonly used to treat POP or Pelvic Organ Prolapse in women. POP occurs when the tissues that hold the pelvic organs in place become weak or stretched, and prolapsed or bulge into the vagina. In extreme cases, the prolapsed can cause organs to fall into the vaginal opening.

Approximately 50% of women will experience POP during their lifetime. Only 5% of these cases will be severe enough to need surgery. When a woman has surgery to correct POP, the doctor will go through the vagina and reinforce the walls of tissue that have become weakened with the vaginal mesh. This will realign the organs back to their natural position, and relieve symptoms.

On July 13th, 2011 the FDA released a statement stating that women who had had the POP surgery with the mesh installed were having serious complications. Over 1,000 doctors and other institutes reported problems with the mesh implants in the first year of their release.

Complications of a vaginal mesh malfunction include:

Erosion or protrusion of the mesh from the soft tissue

Pain, including pain during intercourse

Infections of or around the area where the mesh was installed

Urinary tract problems

Bleeding from mesh site

Damage to nearby organs

At Richard Schwartz and Associates of Mississippi we understand that these complications are things you did not ask for. Women experiencing these symptoms need to contact a physician, and then a personal injury attorney today. You may be entitled to compensation for your pain, suffering, and losses because of the vaginal mesh transplant. Please call us today at 601-988-8888 for a free and confidential consultation.
