Summer Safe Driving for Teens

A report put out by AAA shows that more teenagers die in traffic accidents during the summer more than any other time of the year, specifically between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In 2010, more than 5,000 teens were injured and 42 of those teenagers died in traffic related accidents during the summer.

Possible causes of this increase in car accidents may be due to unrestricted driving since many students have an extended or no curfew once school is out. Having additional passengers in the car can also be the cause since it can cause the driver to pay less attention to the road. As the amount of passengers increase, so do the risks of being involved in a car crash.

Many parents welcome the idea of their teenagers being able to drive themselves around, however parents still have a responsibility to make sure their teenagers are driving safe and aren’t engaging in dangerous behavior while driving. Texting and alcohol related accidents are becoming more and more common, especially during the summer when teenagers have more free time.

Parents can help keep their teenagers safe, even if they’re not in the car with them. Be sure to talk with your teen about safe driving and paying attention to the road and posted road signs. While teenagers may object, having a curfew and limiting passengers can also help reduce risks. Having teenagers check in is also a safety precaution as it lets the parents know where they are in case there is a car accident.
