Other Specialists & Combination Therapy
When someone is involved in a serious accident, and sustains serious injuries as a result there are often many complicated steps one must take in order to achieve an active and healthy lifestyle again. The combination of general medicine and therapy is often one of these steps and should not be taken lightly. When done properly, the combination can lead to a drastic decrease in recovery time, but if addressed incorrectly the results can cause permanent damage to the patient and their injuries will be prolonged.
The process of combining usually begins after the emergency stage. Being in a serious accident usually means the person is rushed into the emergency room. There they are stabilized and surgeries might happen in a short amount of time to correct the life threatening injury. From there they are switched into the critical care unit, or another portion of the hospital. Then, a more in depth diagnosis can be achieved and more surgeries might be administered to further correct the issue.
From there, patients are often informed about their healing options and the different techniques that might be available. If this injury was of an extremity (arm, shoulder, legs, etc.) or of a critical physical area like the spine, physical therapy will often be suggested. This kind of therapy works with patients to increase their mobility, and help them function on a daily basis with their injuries. Being involved in physical therapy also decreases healing time and helps reduce the risk of chronic pain or arthritis development in the injured area.
Many doctors will suggest a combination of general medicine techniques, like pain medication or other in office remedies while the patient is in physical therapy. The two together can help the patient reduce pain and increase their mobility after a serious accident. However, this combination needs to be taken seriously. Only participating in one portion of the program might have severe repercussions. If the exercises and routines that the Physical therapists suggests are ignored or done improperly, there is a high risk for injuring one’s self further or increasing the risk of an injury healing abnormally. This can cause the severe development of arthritis and chronic pain in the future.
There is a common misconception that medication prescribed by doctors will heal an injury. Often times, this is quite untrue. The medication doctors prescribe only blocks the pain temporarily, and for more serious injuries, prolonged use of the medication increases the chances of addiction to the medication. Not participating in physical therapy when it is prescribed by a general medical practitioner means that you might not be healing properly. So always taking part in all parts of the medical program your doctor has cut out for you is especially important, and should not be taken lightly.
