According to studies done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teenagers are least likely to use seatbelts over any other age group. While there seems to be a growing awareness for reducing distracted drivers, there also needs to be a growing awareness to encourage all drivers and passengers to wear a seatbelt, no matter where they’re going.
While many teenagers feel invincible and that nothing could happen to them these studies have shown that they are more likely to be in an accident, especially with distractions such as friends and cell phones. A car accident can cause a great deal of damage, but if the people involved aren’t wearing a seatbelt the accident can be fatal. Adults can be just as guilty too and often are the ones setting a bad example for their children and teenagers.
Currently Mississippi has fees and penalties for those who aren’t wearing a seatbelt but many states consider not wearing a seatbelt a moving violation. These moving violations are put on the driver’s record and can affect their car insurance premium just like many car accidents can affect a person’s car insurance premium.
Many hope that the Mississippi Legislature will consider not wearing a seatbelt a moving violation to help encourage Mississippians to wear their seatbelt whenever they get into their car. Seatbelts may seem like a nuisance at times, but they can help save lives and reduce the amount of fatalities due to car wrecks.
