State troopers have noticed an increase in speeders and school bus safety law violators over the past few years, especially since there are now more school buses on the road. While these violators never intend to harm anyone, their actions can cause a car accident or even injure a child.
School safety is more than just obeying crossing guards when they’re out. Drivers need to make sure follow the posted school speed limit signs and any stops signs surrounding a school. Children can dart out at any moment when there’s a school zone and distracted drivers and speeders may not be able to stop as quickly to avoid an accident.
Drivers also need to make sure they stop at least a car’s length away from a school bus who has it’s flashing lights on and is picking up or dropping off kids. There is no excuse for passing a school bus when the stop sign on the bus is visible and the flashing lights are on.
Those who violate school bus safely laws can expect to pay $750 for a first offense and a second offense within five years could cost $1500. Drivers need to put the cell phones down and make sure they pay attention to the road, especially when in a school zone. Drivers should be also be aware of school zones and plan extra time into their commute if they know they’ll be driving through a school zone.
