Labor Day unofficially marks the end of summer, even though most kids have already gone back to school. Thousands of drivers take to the road this weekend to have one last vacation for a while. With so many people on the road, it’s important to make sure you drive safely and are prepared in case of an emergency. Follow these tips to make sure your Labor Day weekend is safe for you and everyone else on the road.
- Get plenty of rest before driving. Tired drivers are less alert and cannot make quick decisions in case of an emergency.
- Buckle up. Don’t even back out of the driveway until everyone in the car is buckled properly.
- Know your route and make sure you check the weather and let someone know your plans in case there is an accident.
- Follow all posted speed limit signs and traffic signals.
- Avoid tailing other drivers. Keep a safe distance when driving behind other vehicles and make sure you use your turn signal when passing or turning to avoid a car accident.
- Avoid distractions such as the cell phone.
- Don’t drink and drive.
Before getting out on the road put together a car safety kit. Include things like a flashlight with extra batteries, blankets, water, snacks and any medicine or emergency contact information necessary. Bad weather or traffic delays can last longer than you think and you want to be prepared in case it happens.
Be sure to have your car checked before hitting the road to make sure everything is running smoothly and to avoid any problems or accidents. Richard Schwartz and Associates wants you to have a safe and happy Labor Day.
