Prom night can easily be ruined by a few drinks, a distracted driver or someone texting while driving. Mothers Against Drunk Driving have reported that nearly half of all prom season car wrecks that involve 15-20 year-olds involve alcohol. Parents and schools are urging teenagers to make wise decisions; not just on prom night, but anytime they enter a vehicle.
Many schools already promote awareness for drunk driving by placing a totaled car on the campus in hopes that students will what could happen. In Georgia, one school and police department teamed up to act out a mock crash on the day before prom. Students watched as a driver was arrested and as paramedics placed a fatally injured teen in a body bag. Their hopes are that the students will begin to see the seriousness of their actions and how being distracted while driving or drinking and driving can cost lives.
