Night Driving Safety

Driving at night poses many risks and challenges. Even for the experienced driver, a dark road with no lights and two lanes can pose a serious challenge. At Richard Schwartz and Associates of Mississippi, we’re in the business of helping people. We understand that over 30% of Mississippi’s roadways are considered rural and have very little to no lighting at night. So how does one avoid an accident on these dark roads and maintain a safe driving environment?

Watch out for dazzle. Dazzle is a term used to describe the light produced by an oncoming vehicle’s lights. These lights can be blinding and can affect a driver’s vision for up to 30 seconds after the vehicle has passed by. Always try to keep your eyes on the lines of the road when another vehicle is approaching. This can keep the dazzle effect at a minimum, and keep you straight on the roadway.

Watch out for wild animals. Deer and other wildlife are common occurrences on Mississippi’s roadways. Driving slowly and always keeping your eyes on the road can avoid a deadly accident with one of these animals. Hitting a deer on the roadway will not only kill the animal but it has the potential to take your life and total your vehicle as well.

Pass other vehicles with extreme caution. Passing another vehicle at night is risky business, especially on a rural roadway that might be only two lanes. Always make sure there are no oncoming vehicles before you begin to pass, and as you pass the other vehicle make sure you’ve completely overtaken it before returning to your lane. Avoid passing vehicles at night if at all possible, as this one of the leading causes of nighttime car wrecks.

Use your high beams appropriately. Nothing is more dangerous and aggravating for other drivers than approaching drivers who leave their high beams on while driving toward oncoming traffic. High beams can cause a serious case of dazzle, which is dangerous for other drivers. High beams should always be turned off within 1 mile of approaching oncoming vehicles.
