At Richard Schwartz and Associates of Mississippi we understand that Motorcycles are quickly gaining popularity in the United States. In the past five years alone, Mississippi has seen a 2% growth in the buying and licensing of motorcycles. Despite the increase in street presence, the rate of accidents for these vehicles has decreased in the past five years. This comes as a surprise, since statistics have shown a steady increase in motorcycle accident fatalities since 1975.
The first year of decreased motorcycle fatalities was 2009, with another slight decrease in numbers in 2010 as well. Even with these decreases, statistics show that biking fatalities on our roadways are still a problem. At Richard Schwartz and Associates of Mississippi, we believe that education is the best way to prevent accidents between cars and motorcycles.
So what can you do as a driver to keep motorcycle drivers safer on the roadways? Following these simple steps can help you avoid a wreck with one of these vehicles, and may even save a life.
1. Give Motorcycles room. Many people feel there should be less space between a normal size vehicle and a motorcycle to be safe. This is not true. An automobile should allow a motorcycle two car lengths of distance just as any other motor vehicle on the roadway.
2. Watch for Motorcycles. Sometimes these smaller vehicles can be overlooked when you’re driving. Paying close attention to the roadway, especially when trying to merge into another lane, is the key to awareness of where motorcycles are driving.
3. Listen for Motorcycles. Motorcycles are manufactured to have loud engines so that they can alert other drivers they’re on the roadway. Try to always listen for the sound of a motorcycle engine, and then visually locate it as soon as possible.
4. Wait for Motorcycles. Patience while driving is important for the safety of everyone, not just motorcycle drivers. However, always try to take your time and let motorcycles through so that no one is placed at risk by dangerous driving behavior.
At Richard Schwartz and Associates of Mississippi we are dedicated to making Mississippi a better place to live. Always be mindful of your surroundings when driving. Remember, motorcycles are vehicles too, and have the same rights as any other vehicle. Practice these four tips and drive safely to avoid colliding with a motorcycle or any other vehicle.
