Memorial Day Kicks Off the Summer Driving Season

Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, a time of various road trips and vacations. Summer is usually known as the busiest driving season, especially during holiday weekends such as Memorial Day. AAA estimates that there will be approximately 35 million drivers on the road for Memorial Day alone! More drivers can often mean more possibilities for accidents so be sure to take these steps to ensure you have a fun and safe holiday weekend.

  • Before leaving check tire pressure, wipers and fluids.
  • Map your route. Be sure to let family members or friends know the route and where you are staying and when you expect to be there so they can alert authorities in case they do not hear from you in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Buckle up. While seatbelts may feel like an inconvenience they save lives.
  •  Be careful when backing up. Check behind your car for any objects before getting into the car and backing up and check again once you are in the car to avoid any accidents.
  • Go the speed limit; most car crashes occur when drivers are going faster than the surrounding traffic.
  • Know that large trucks may be unable to see you if you cannot see their mirrors.
  • Do not cut in front of large trucks; they are heavier and take longer to make a complete stop. It will take a fully loaded tractor-trailer a football field and both end zones to come to a complete stop when driving at highway speeds.
  • Pay attention to road signs, conditions and drivers around you. Distracted drivers are the leading cause of car accidents.
  • Have some sort of emergency kit in your car at all times. Items such as bottled water, a blanket, flashlights, sunscreen, and non-perishable snacks can be extremely helpful if you’re stranded somewhere.
