Medication Litigation
- Avandia (Generic name: Rosiglitazone) is prescribed to control high blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes to help restore the body's proper response to insulin. This drug has now been linked to dangerous side effects which include an increase in the risk of heart attack and heart-related death. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires a "Black Box" warning on Avandia addressing an increased risk of heart failure connected with fluid retention. - Trasylol - Injection given to patients who underwent major heart surgery to prevent excessive bleeding. This medication has been known to cause heart attack, stroke, renal failure and dialysis.
- Fosamax - Used to prevent and treat osteoporosis. Medication has been known to cause a serious bone disease called Osteonecrosis of the jaw.
- Digitek - Recalled April 25, 2008. This medication is used to treat heart failure and abnormal heart rhythm. This medication has been recalled due to the possibility that tablets with double the appropriate thickness may have been commercially released. These double strength tablets can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure, cardiac instability, bradycardia, and digitalis.
- Avandia - Medication prescribed for Type II Diabetes patients. This medication has been known to raise the risk of heart attacks by 43%.
- Gadolinium Contrasting Agent - MRI dye containing Gadolinium. This particular dye has been known to cause kidney damage.
- Hormone Therapy - Medication used to reduce the Risk of menopause. Medications such as Prempro and Premarin can cause the increase risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, stroke and heart disease.
- OrthoEvra - A hormone contraceptive transdermal patch. Has been linked to cause serious injuries such as blood clots, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis and even death.
- Paxil - Anti-depressant manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Paxil has caused an increased risk of heart birth defects in children born to mothers exposed to Paxil.
- Viagra - Manufactured by Pfizer, used to treat erectile dysfunction, has been known to cause partial or complete blindness caused by non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy. A condition in which blood supply is reduced to the optic nerve causing permanent nerve damage.
- Permax and Dostinex - Used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other neurological problems such as restless leg syndrome. These medications have been known to cause Valvular heart disease.
- Bextra - Used to treat arthritis. This medication has been known to cause heart attack, stroke and death.
- Zithromax - An antibiotic used to treat respiratory infections, skin infections and some sexually transmitted diseases. Medication has been known to cause abnormal liver function, jaundice, necrosis, hepatic (liver) failure and death.
Medical Devices
- Pain Pumps - Portable and often disposable pain management devices which administer local anesthetic through a catheter to a surgical wound site for several days following surgery. The use of pain pumps to administer medication directly into the glenohumeral joint has been linked to a severe condition called Postarthroscopic Gelnohumeral Chondrolysis, in which the cartilage of the humeral head and the glenoid space of the shoulder process has been destroyed.
- Guidant Heart Device - Implantable defibrillators and pacemakers manufactured by the Guidant Corporation has been known to malfunction.
- Medtronic Heart Device - Implantable defibrillators manufactured by Medtronic, Inc. which were implanted in 1997 and 1998. Another recall was announced on February 10, 2005 for additional Medtronic defibrillators with batteries that malfunctioned between April 2001 and December 2003.
