Within the last week more than three pedestrians have been struck by moving vehicles in Mississippi. While pedestrians should make sure being safe and following the rules of the road when walking down the road, drivers should be extra cautious when driving alongside pedestrians.
Regardless of whether a pedestrian is in sight drivers should always be focused on the road and following all posted signs. Looking down, even for a second can lead to serious consequences and a distracted driver is just as dangerous. Never assume you know what a pedestrian will do. Always slow down and use caution when passing.
Pedestrians need to make sure they are also following posted signs and crossing when it is permitted. It might be faster to cross in the middle of the street instead of walking to the crosswalk, however this behavior only leads to accidents. Pedestrians should also be aware of their surrounding, wearing reflective clothing at night and making sure cell phones and other electronics aren’t distracting them or keeping them from hearing any important sounds such as sirens or honking cars.
Whether you’ve been involved in an accident involving another vehicle or a pedestrian call the lawyers at Richard Schwartz & Associates. They’ll help you work with the insurance company and help you determine what steps to take.
