Eleven years ago, Mississippi enacted a mandatory auto insurance law and yet thousands of people are still driving around without auto insurance. In fact, Mississippi has the second highest number of uninsured drivers in the country. Most of these uninsured drivers cheat by letting their current coverage expire and continuing to try and use the card.
Some lawmakers are pushing to pass a bill that will create an electronic system to track drivers that don't carry insurance on their vehicles. If you are pulled over for a traffic citation or you are involved in a car accident, the police officer will type in your tag number and instantly be able to check whether or not the car has car insurance. The Department of Public Safety could run random checks. This bill will also provide instant access to current insurance information. And make it more difficult to get a tag. The goal is to force more motorists who are driving without auto insurance to comply with the state's mandatory automobile insurance law.
It’s important to make sure you comply with the state law and have proper car insurance it becomes even more important when you’ve been involved in a car accident.
