Jackson's Interstate 220

Jackson, Mississippi traffic has always been congested. Like any city, people want to get where they’re going, and not be bothered by other drivers. Richard Schwartz & Associates of Mississippi wants the people of Jackson to slow down and drive safely. The personal injury lawyers at our office have picked out several different areas of the city that have especially bad traffic. Know these areas, and what to expect when you’re driving around the capitol of Mississippi.

Interstate 220 connects South Jackson and Interstate 20 to Interstate 55. It is approximately 11 miles from end to end, and has been the site of many fatal car accidents. One of the most recent fatal car wrecks on I-220 occurred in March, and took the life of Jackson celebrity Jobie Martin. A vehicle crossed the median of the roadway, and collided head on with vehicles traveling the opposite direction. Fatal accidents such as these are common place for this small strip of road, as well as rear end collisions and heavy traffic related wrecks.

This strip of interstate is very important to Jackson’s transportation system. It is how many people make their commute to and from the workplace. Between 7am-10am and 4pm-5pm are the busiest times for this roadway. This is the time period where many rear end collision accidents occur. The heavy traffic flow causes cars to drive very close to one another. Then, someone in the front makes a sudden stop and gets rear ended. Serious accidents like these can be avoided, however, if people just slow down and leave plenty of space between vehicles.

Interstate 220 has a speed limit of 70 miles per hour, which is a 10 mile an hour raise from Interstate 20, and Interstate 55 within the city limits. Part of the issue with 220 is that many people do not pay attention to this speed limit, and speed through the connection. This causes unsafe driving conditions at high speeds; cars are close together traveling 80 miles an hour down the road. So when someone stops, the reaction time is almost none for those traveling behind them.

At Richard Schwartz and Associates, we encourage people to drive safely on all roads. Paying attention to the speed limit, not driving distracted, and wearing your seatbelt can greatly reduce your chances of getting in a car wreck and being seriously injured in one. Richard Schwartz and Associates understands how frustrating being involved in a car wreck can be.
