The FDA has moved to take two popular painkillers off the market, 5 years after they have been banned in Great Britain. The painkillers, Darvon and it's sister drug Darvocet, are known by their generic names propozyphene.
The FDA was slow to move against the commonly prescribed opioids. In January 2009, an FDA advisory committee voted 14-12 against continued marketing of propozyphene. But the FDA rejected that recommendation and instead ordered a study of the drug's cardiac effects. That study showed an increased risk for heart arrhythmias even in healthy patients, not just those weakened by sickness.
Their conclusion was that the benefits no longer outweighed the risks. Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Newport, Kentucky, which said it would comply with the FDA’s request to withdraw the drug, makes Darvon and Darvocet. Generic makers of propoxyphene are expected to follow suit.
