Distracted drivers make up almost 80% of all car crashes, but what’s so alarming is that these car accidents can be avoided. While radios, cd players and GPS systems can be distracting the most common distraction is the cell phone.
Driving can be safer and less stressful for those who can stay off the phone while driving. Use these tips to prepare yourself before driving that will help eliminate distractions.
- Make any adjustments to the radio, cd player or control settings while the car is stopped. Fumbling around for a cd or to turn the air conditioner down may not seem dangerous, but it only takes a second for a car wreck to happen.
- Make any phone calls or send text messages before leaving and let others know you’ll be unable to talk until you reach your destination. You should certainly avoid using the phone during heavy traffic or bad weather when your concentration is needed even more.
- Program your GPS ahead of time. If you need to look at a map then make sure you pull over and don’t try to do it while driving.
- Keep your car as tidy as possible since loose items rolling around the car can create a hazard.
- Eating in the car almost seems like second nature to some, but it can be incredibly dangerous since it only takes one spill to pull your focus away from the road and onto the spilled drink or food item.
