As adults and teenagers hit the roads for road-trips this summer it is inevitable that they will come across traffic jams due to car accidents, bad weather, or construction zones. These situations can be frustrating, especially for those who are trying to be somewhere at a certain time, however regardless of how much of a hurry you’re in it’s still important to stay focused on the road and to be prepared. Before heading out for a trip, or even to go just around the corner, follow these tips to better prepare yourself for traffic jams and to avoid creating more problems.
- Check the radio for traffic updates, or make sure to check MDOT’s website for construction zones to better plan your route. Knowing about congested areas beforehand may allow you to find an alternate route.
- Watch out for cars that weave in and out trying to get ahead. The safest thing to do is to stay out of their way and keep following the posted speed limit signs. Check your mirrors as they approach and make sure you always use a turn signal when changing lanes.
- Treat rush hour traffic like you would bad weather: if you don’t have to get out in it, don’t. No matter how long you’ve been stuck in traffic it is illegal to use the shoulder lane as a lane. Not only is it dangerous, but if there has been an accident emergency vehicles will need to maneuver through traffic using the shoulder and you’ll only create more problems.
- Be sure to watch for debris on the road when passing construction zones and car accidents. Most construction zones will have posted speed limits, but it’s also important to slow down when passing car accidents as well.
- Keep an emergency kit in your car in case you’re held in traffic longer than expected. Having a blanket, extra water and some snacks will help avoid additional problems due to a traffic jam or car wreck.
- Be polite. Cutting other drivers off or tailing other cars is not only rude but it is extremely dangerous.
- Be extra cautious when going through construction zones or dealing with traffic jams and car wrecks at night as your vision will be limited.
