The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling for a ban on cell phone usage of any kind by drivers. This would include hands free devices currently required by some states. This may seem extreme, especially since no state currently outlaws cell phone usage in cars, however they claim that a decade worth of research reveals a need for this ban.
Their concern is that with new cell phones coming out each year and the ability to check email, watch movies and browse facebook poses a higher risk for drivers who can easily become distracted. Even the wireless headsets can be dangerous since studies have shown that the conversation can be more distracting than actually holding the cell phone.
Though this recommendation will not be popular they hope that people will begin to realize the importance of staying off their phones while driving. Many states already have bans on texting while driving or require cell phone users to use hands-free devices. Each state will have the opportunity to vote on adopting this ban in the next election cycle. While many are skeptical the ban will ever pass in any state the NTSB hopes that this will at least encourage drivers to keep cell phones away when driving.
